Signs of Spring: Preparing Your Garden for Planting Season
After a weekend of beautiful weather, we are back to April showers; it seems like Mother Nature is playing games with us! While it’s disappointing that it is too cold yet to start planting outside, you can cure your spring fever by taking the time to prepare your garden for when it does warm up! Here are some tips for getting your garden ready for planting season:
- Say goodbye to winter protection! With the temperatures rising, it’s safe to start removing burlap covers and wraps from your garden that protect against frost.
- Get to raking! Now is the perfect time to rake away dead leaves from around your trees, bushes, and perennials so they can start soaking up the sunlight. It is especially important to clear the ground around your spring bulbs – without clean ground, they cannot come up!
- Inspect for winter damage! It is prime time to look over trees and shrubs for any harm that may have resulted from the bitter cold storms of winter. Prune off any broken branches or twigs and tips to prevent further damage.
- Fertilize your planting ground! The ground thawing signals that it is time to fertilize your soil. Sprinkle granular fertilizer around your trees, shrubs, and perennials. Be sure to choose a fertilizer that contains the specific nutrients necessary for your plants.
- Edge your beds! Give your garden beds clear edges to give your landscaping a clean look. Using a manual edging tool or a power edger will work wonders on your beds!
