Whether you are a master artist or an ambitious novice, pumpkin carving is such a fun and creative activity for Halloween. We at 1-800Flowers|Flowerama Iowa City love all things pumpkins, especially pumpkin designs. Historically, pumpkins weren't the only vegetable that was the canvas. In Celtic regions of Ireland and Scotland, they used to carve potatoes and turnips as that is what they had readily available. Here in our neck of the woods we have a variety of sizes to choose from for carvings, from the mini jacks to the Jumbo's. For my "Krystal's Kreation" I decided to incorporate a fairy garden element by cutting out a window in the face of the pumpkin.

Glittering is quite popular for corsages and bouttioneres and always a great way to include more color, so I went with a purple and green combo on these already rich purple carnations that are next to the green athos path leading to a spooky witches lair. The wicked spiky plant is an air plant, also known as a tillandsia. Air plants are part of the bromeliad family, and native to the Southern United States, Mexico, and Central and South America. They don't need soil to grow so they are pretty versatile. Just a quick dunk in water or a spritz from a water bottle and they are good to go for another week!
A fun activity for your own "Kid'z Korner" are these lil' monsters:

Simply cut an oval in the mini jacks for the set of chompers and seal the fresh cuts with Vaseline, which I also did for the large pumpkin to keep your project longer lasting.
Thanks for joining me with my first "Krystal's Kreations" blog post, which will be a source of inspiration for each new season. We Love to see your Kreations as well! We have our first Pumpkin Parade contest this year, where you can share your pumpkin masterpieces with us on our facebook (1-800Flowers|Flowerama Iowa City) or on our instagram (floweramaiowacity) with the hashtag #floweramapumpkinparade and the one with the most likes will win the Grand Prize of a night at Paglia's Pizza! We can't wait to see them all! Happy Halloween!
